Pastora®

Product Overview

Broad-spectrum, selective weed and grass control for use in bermudagrass pastures and hayfields.

Pastora® herbicide provides control or suppression of sandbur, johnsongrass, and bahiagrass as well as 26 other grasses in bermudagrass pastures and hayfields. Pastora helps hay and forage producers grow high-value, weed-free bermudagrass. It controls a broad-spectrum of undesirable grasses and broadleaf weeds that can easily lower hay value. This control leads to higher quality forage that horse and cattle producers demand in their #1 bermudagrass hay.

Key Benefits

  • Provides winter annual grass and weed control to ensure a quality first cutting
  • Controls key perennial grasses and emerged summer annual weeds and grasses, allowing for more high-quality hay cuttings
  • Applications can be made early season or after cuttings to help control any escaped weeds or grasses
  • Controls or suppresses over 25 grasses and 100 broadleaf weeds that are or can become a problem to hay producers
  • Can also be used as an effective spot-treatment

FAQ

What is Pastora?

Pastora® is a selective, broad-spectrum herbicide that provides postemergence control of grassy weeds and postemergence and residual control of broadleaf weeds in bermudagrass pastures, meadows and rights of way.

What are the active ingredients in Pastora herbicide?

Pastora herbicide contains two active ingredients: nicosulfuron and metsulfuron methyl (Group 2 herbicides).

Where can Pastora be applied?

Pastora herbicide is registered for use on bermudagrass pastures and hay meadows, and for use in non-crop areas and rights-of-way. Check with your state extension or Department of Agriculture before use to ensure Pastora is registered in your state.

How is Pastora applied?

Pastora herbicide is a dry-flowable granule that is mixed in water and applied as a uniform broadcast spray by ground or aerial equipment, or as a spot treatment. A spray adjuvant must be used in the spray mix unless otherwise specified on the Pastora product label.

How does Pastora work?

Pastora herbicide is absorbed through the foliage and roots of weeds, rapidly inhibiting their growth. Leaves of susceptible plants appear pale, yellow, or yellow-white from 1 to 3 weeks after application, and the growing point subsequently dies. The final effects on annual weeds are evident about 4 to 6 weeks after application. The ultimate effects on perennial weeds occur in the growing season following application.

Is water required to activate Pastora?

For preemergence weed control, one to two inches of rainfall or sprinkler irrigation (enough to wet the top 2-3 inches of soil) may be needed to move Pastora herbicide into the weed root zone before the next flush of broadleaf weeds emerge. Without sufficient rainfall or sprinkler irrigation to move Pastora into the weed root zone, weeds that germinate after treatment will not be controlled. The amount of moisture required for sufficient activation increases with crop or weed residue and for finer textured soils.

What species of broadleaf weeds and brush does Pastora control?

Pastora herbicide controls and/or suppresses a broad spectrum of broadleaf and grassy weeds, including the following. See the product label for a complete list.

Broadleaf Weeds: Buttercup, common broomweed, crotons, curly dock, dogfennel, henbit, pigweed, sneezeweed, Texas groundsel, thistle complex, plantain and more

Grassy weeds: Bahiagrass, barnyardgrass, broadleaf signalgrass, crabgrass*, foxtails (bristly, giant, green, yellow), goosegrass*, itchgrass, johnsongrass, sandbur/grassbur, ryegrass (non ALS resistant), and more

*Suppression

When should Pastora be applied?

Apply Pastora herbicide to bermudagrass pastures and hay meadows that have been established for at least one growing season. For best results, time applications to young, actively growing broadleaf or grass weeds during spring green-up when annual grasses are less than 2" tall.

Can livestock graze in areas where Pastora has been used?

There are no grazing or haying restrictions for non-lactating or lactating livestock including cattle, horses, sheep, goats, and other animals when using Pastora herbicide as directed. Grazing animals do not have to be moved off the pasture before, during, or after applying Pastora.

Can Pastora be applied via ground spot applications?

Spot applications may be made using equipment such as back pack, ATV, or hand sprayers. Thorough coverage of foliage and stems is necessary to optimize results. Use an adjustable conejet nozzle with an orifice size of X6 to X12 or equivalent. The application volume required will vary with the height and density of the weeds or brush and the application equipment used.

Does Pastora require a surfactant to be effective?

Unless otherwise directed, applications of Pastora herbicide must include a surfactant. Nonionic Surfactant (NIS) is the preferred surfactant under most conditions. Surfactant products must contain at least 60% NIS with a hydrophilic/lipophilicbalance (HLB) greater than 12. In addition, ammonium nitrogen fertilizer and/or antifoaming agents can be used unless specifically prohibited by tank-mix partner labeling. Consult your local Bayer CropScience LP fact sheets, technical bulletins, and service policies prior to using other adjuvant systems.

Can Pastora Herbicide be used to control weeds under tree canopies?

No, Pastora herbicide should not be used under or around any desirable trees.
